Glad to see changes on this product… 😉

AVG reports a virus/worm/threat/whatever in this executable.
      FYI.

nightly builds ????? what dose this mean ???

    4. aashendorf on December 27, 2008 10:58

      Great program.
Only flaw I can see is that when coping folder – they are not identical after coping. Folder timestamp needs to reflect original timestamp not the current date that new folder is created. We sort all of shows by date-time – this breaks this because all copied folders now are stamped today. Other copy programs preserve this timestamp.

Have shown this to our PC Users Group many times.

      Alan

    5. Donn Edwards on December 27, 2008 14:02

I’m having problems with the sound effects. Sometimes they play, sometimes they don’t. Why is this?

    6. Grégory Schmid on December 27, 2008 17:49

      Hello, thanks for the update!

However, I have a bug: after moving a folder, files that are inside are moved, but the source folder is not deleted, leaving empty folders. I had not this problem with the previous versions.

      Greg

    7. Eka-X on December 27, 2008 17:53

Great to see a change in moving file function, because it’s a big problem to me.
When I moving file in teracopy 2 beta 4, It’s slower than Vista’s copy.

    8. SomeDude on December 28, 2008 00:19

      @Jane Looker
It just means daily compiles of the software, and it’s not normaly meant for the average user, as it can be buggy or even broken.

You often see nightly build in open source projects, like Firefox.

    9. Jeff on December 28, 2008 00:32

Spent a few hours fixing folders timestamps error. TC already sets original date & time after new (copied) folder is created, but it turns out that Windows updates folder timestamp when a new file copied into this folder.

P.S. Sorry, AVG virus report is not accepted. Please let me know if NOD32, Kaspersky or Symantec Antivirus reports a virus. Why? Take any .exe file, pack it with ASProtect, and test it at http://www.virustotal.com. 6 of 39 antivirus program will call it “suspicious”, “Trojan.Win32.Anomaly”, “Win32.Malware.gen!84” and so on.

    10. Ken on December 28, 2008 01:13

      You state:
“Changed: When moving, source files deleted immediately (after comparing size). ”
Can you please elaborate on what was done before, and what is done now ? Thanks.

    11. Mark on December 28, 2008 08:43

When copying or moving files to C:\Windows\System32 using TeraCopy 2.0 beta 4 in Windows x64, the files instead end up in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. The only way to copying or moving files to System32 is by temporary disabling TeraCopy.

    12. Mark on December 28, 2008 08:44

Apparently, bug still remain in nightly build.

    13. desi on December 28, 2008 12:36

      Nod32 says file is OK.

    14. mai9 on December 28, 2008 16:32

ken, I think that he means that before, teracopy copied all files and after that, it deleted the originals. And now, it copies and deletes at every file, without waiting to finish all the job.

I personally wanted the previous method of copying and deleting, because when you’re copying large amount of data, if something happens in between, then you know that all files are still in the original path. But with the implemented system, half files are in the destination and half in the original place.

Jeff, maybe you could add it as an option? (pretty please, that’s quite important for me)

    15. Stephan on December 28, 2008 19:50

I also request an option for the old copying/moving bevaviour-
it gave me the surplus safety that I bought TeraCopy for…

I can see that some find the new way useful, but I don’t see why we shouldn’t be able to choose. Thanks for reconsidering!

    16. Ken on December 28, 2008 23:01

Definitely would prefer that it wait until the entire job is completed successfully prior to any deleting.

Generally, the usual job is to move a folder between drives, and having half on one drive and half on the other is certainly worse than having the whole transfer fail.

    17. Jeff on December 29, 2008 02:26

Agree, will make an option for this. Both methods have their pros and cons.

    18. TC Nomad on December 29, 2008 09:04

Does anybody else experience a bit of a lag when files are moved or copied in Teracopy? This doesn’t seem to happen with normal explorer copy or move… Seems to happen even when a small number of files are involved.

    19. John Kubik on December 29, 2008 09:51

Just wanted to say I LOVE THIS PROGRAM. I have told many of my friends about this program, and they love it too! If I buy the pro version what is that going to do for me in terms of teracopy 2? The only thing I would like to see added is a more verbose system for dealing with same-file-name files. For instance it gets kind of tiresome having to check the size differences on each file to determine if they are the same or not. I would like to see a way to parameterize criteria for handing same name files as to include only copying same name files that have different crc’s and skipping same name files that have same crc’s.
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR AN AWESOME PROGRAM!!!!

    20. Likepeas on December 29, 2008 21:36

How do i make it as my default transfer handler on a vista 64bit

    21. Arnellord Bondoc on December 30, 2008 09:40

      Sorry for the late feedback…
Just wanted to say thank you for the program.
Teracopy works 100% on my system. It works flawlessly!
Copied/moved almost terabyte of data – no errors!
My system is Windows Vista Ultimate x64bit.
      Once again, THANK YOU!

    22. Chris on December 30, 2008 10:51

Thanks; this helped me get all my personal files from my office computer. 🙂

BTW, do you get emails from your “helpdesk” system? I submitted some reports (439 and 440) but can’t tell if they went anywhere.

    23. Nemo on December 30, 2008 18:23

Hey Jeff, make an option for customize copy\to, move\to explorer menus. All i want it`s make by myself links, for destinations folder adreses.
I have some folders, where teracopy copys regulary a lot of data, but its a pity to browse every time for every new folder.
Please make possible for a user to add links to folders into explorer context menu of teracopy. And if you will add hotkeys for each link, it`ll be the best possible decision. Sorry for my broken english, hope, that you understand.

    24. Ythan on December 31, 2008 21:34

Awesome, thanks for making nightly builds available! This just reaffirms my decision to register. Keep up the good work.

    25. Ken on January 1, 2009 02:58

I just purchased Pro and would like to second the two above requests, namely:

” The only thing I would like to see added is a more verbose system for dealing with same-file-name files. For instance it gets kind of tiresome having to check the size differences on each file to determine if they are the same or not. I would like to see a way to parameterize criteria for handing same name files as to include only copying same name files that have different crc’s and skipping same name files that have same crc’s. ” – John

      and

” I have some folders, where teracopy copys regulary a lot of data, but its a pity to browse every time for every new folder.
Please make possible for a user to add links to folders into explorer context menu of teracopy. And if you will add hotkeys for each link, it`ll be the best possible decision. “

    26. Seb C on January 1, 2009 17:12

I’ve been using this programme quite happily for about 6 months.

I did come across a minor glitch, when copying an empty folder into the same parent folder:
      1- create a new folder
2- select the newly created folder
3- press {CTRL}+{C} and then {CTRL}+{V} to copy and paste it
4- on my computer (WinXP 32 bit), the copied folder is called “_2” and inside of it there is another folder called _2xxxxx (where xxxxx is the original name of the folder created in step 1)

The expected result is the folder copied in step 3 should be named “xxxxx_2” and it should be empty, just like the original folder!

      Regards,
      Seb

    27. Ken on January 2, 2009 00:26

I have yet to try the nightly builds (because I am waiting for deleting-as-you-go to become an option), but prior to them, there is a persistent bug where the GUI does not show anything in the file listings when the file or folder is copied on the same disk.

    28. super-s on January 3, 2009 18:32

this program has helped me a lot since I have 5 big hard drives, and this little program is great to have when moving files between the discs

    29. Andy on January 3, 2009 21:50

Hi there. Just wanted to let you know that drag&dropping from 7-zip 64bit under Vista 64 doesn’t work. TeraCopy says “The system cannot find the path specified.”

      Otherwise good job so far!

    30. jhill on January 4, 2009 19:31

      Hi,
I love this program, except one thing. Since no one else is complaining about my problem, I probably am not doing somthing right. When I copy a large number of files and the program asks about an overwrite (previously existing folder) or some other issue, the program hangs waiting for an answer (skip? overwrite?) instead of just skipping that file and going on to the next one until the end. Last night I was copying 18 GB of files, went to bed, and when I woke up, it waswaiting for an answer from me, so only 4GB got copied Is there a way to set it so that it will skip over any problematic fils until the end?
      thanks,
      jhill

    31. Didi on January 4, 2009 20:49

      Hi Jeff,
I use the latest build of Teracopy, but the folder timestamps still have the date and time when the copying process started.
You mentioned this bug has been fixed in the version from the 28th December, but unfortunately it hasn´t.

Of course I let the copy process finish without interruptions.
Maybe this happens because I copy my files to a network share?

    32. Nick on January 4, 2009 22:27

      A couple of comments :

      1) Please DO NOT delete files after move without providing option to check CRC first; otherwise the source file may be deleted before the new target has been verified as correct.

      2) Could you please provide an option to skip all files except where the file size is different (not just the date) – if some files are seen as corrupt this is a quick way to restore

      Thanks,
      Nick

    33. Sparky on January 5, 2009 02:22

Jeff, have you given any further thought to using silent/verysilent install switches on the TeraCopy installer?

      thanks!

    34. WhaHappenedToMyFiles? on January 6, 2009 00:52

YAY!!!!! Delete as you go when moving!!!!

It sucked when a copy failed in the middle, leaving you to wonder where to start recopying the originals. Delete as you go means less headaches.

I found out the hard way in the old version that “delete” meant “delete everything” from the source folder, not just those files that were successfully moved. Boooo!

    35. Balder on January 6, 2009 14:35

      I agree with Eka-X:
“Great to see a change in moving file function, because it’s a big problem to me. When I moving file in teracopy 2 beta 4, It’s slower than Vista’s copy.”

So seperating Copy and Move in Shell Integration would make my day.

      A great product!

    36. DavidNL on January 6, 2009 15:29

      Hi,

I assume the fragmentation problem isn’t solved in this version yet, since i don’t see it in the change log.
I hope you will get some time to solve this in the future… (see Ronny’s comment: http://blog.codesector.com/2008/08/02/teracopy-20-beta-4/#comment-1025)

      Regards,
      David.

    37. Ken on January 6, 2009 23:40

I second the interest in the fragmentation problem.

    38. Martin on January 7, 2009 04:14

      Guys,

Great program … how about shutdown when complete option?

Very useful when copying large amounts of data overnight.

      Thanks,

      Martin

    39. kram on January 8, 2009 16:39

Hi, really like the program, but…

I use it to send video files over wireless network from my main PC (XP Home) to my HTPC (Vista Ultimate). Is there a way of automatically re-transferring the file if the CRC fails (also, without asking for confirmation)?

    40. Arne on January 8, 2009 17:11

I tried Teracopy Beta to make a copy of my C-drive to a folder on a different drive.
When I did that, Teracopy did not create the folders it copied data from, but put all data in the folder I copied the data into.
Why would Teracopy not create the Folders from my C-drive in this folder. (I use ‘Run as Admin’ since I am Windows Vista.)

I reverted back to general Vista copy.

    41. Michael on January 10, 2009 03:19

I really like the nightly build idea. It is working better for me and I really appreciate all your effort with TeraCopy 2

    42. TheSilent on January 10, 2009 23:50

I think It’s the same as the old one in : (Slow time to copy or move small files)
when moving or copying a small files it’s take a long time than the windows, the windows do this operation very fast than TeraCopy.
So i hope you make it faster and faster than the windows.

And i’m agree with Mark about :
When copying or moving files to C:\Windows\System32 using TeraCopy 2.0 beta 4 in Windows x64, the files instead end up in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. The only way to copying or moving files to System32 is by temporary disabling TeraCopy.

I hope that you make it better and better.
      THANKS

    43. Tarik on January 11, 2009 02:38

Excellent build, TC is one of the finest tool I use (I move tons of small files).

I hope option move & delete after compare will be optional and not by default.

Anyway waiting for final build so to buy it.

      Regards.

    44. DrTeeth on January 12, 2009 01:48

I like this program very much. Unfortunately, development seems to be on the slow side. That is what is stopping me buying the ‘pro’ version.

      Cheers

    45. neo kimura on January 12, 2009 10:53

When moving files from my windows mobile phone Teracopy is not used vista default copy/move manager is launched. The same happens when moving files from a zip/rar file (compressor – izarc) to a folder in my computer. Is this behaviour normal?

    46. Alan on January 12, 2009 11:46

when moving / copying files i encounter the error “Cannot trim file” sometimes and the test reports that the files are not the same

    47. Mank on January 13, 2009 08:34

“Changed: Files add to the end of queue if target folder is the same”

Using the latest build, I started moving some files to a particular folder and then started a new operation copying some other files to the same folder. The ‘copy’ files were added to the queue as the target folder was the same but they also ended up being moved rather than just copied.

    48. bp on January 14, 2009 20:45

Currently using the fortnightly build Jan14 on vista.
What a great program teracopy is. Sooo fast compared to vista’s copy.
One slight problem that i have encounted with this version of teracopy is when i copy files from my C drive to my \\backup drive \folders\ which is located on my Lan i have to press F5 or refresh before i can see the contents in that folder after teracopy has finished.
Any suggestions to fix this would be very much appreciated

PS – CodeSector – Many thanks for a great product

    49. Maik on January 15, 2009 14:18

Can´t TeraCopy use the progressbar defined by the windows style? If you worry about the readability of the text then you can make the font color changeable, too.

      Possible?

      Maik

    50. Spider on January 16, 2009 09:12

i’m using Jan 14 build and there is a bug when moving folder that left the empty folder behind it.
So that i’m agree with Grégory Schmid:
after moving a folder, files that are inside are moved, but the source folder is not deleted, leaving empty folders.
      ————————-
      And i’m agree with Maik:
Can´t TeraCopy use the progressbar defined by the windows style?
So If it possible can you make option to use it or not.
      ————————–
And can you make check box in option to Automatic refresh windows after move or copy the files or folders.
      ————————–
Thank you for this great program.

    51. Tom on January 16, 2009 13:55

I also found out about the fragmenting problem the hard way: after copying about 300GB to a new disk, it was very fragmented. I had to run a defragmenting program for half a day to clean up the disk.

Could you give us a clue if this can/will be fixed?

      Thanks!

    52. Oleg on January 16, 2009 18:30

I’d also like to second the bug where when cutting and pasting a folder, the original one doesn’t get fully removed. What seems to happen for me, is that when I move a folder which contains a large file (say ~5GB) and a small file (say ~1KB), the 5GB file gets removed, but the 1KB does not, and therefore neither does the folder.

Also, I’d like the second the point where using TeraCopy, files get fragmented very heavily. I just moved around 3TB worth of stuff, and the disks don’t look too good afterwards. Using the Windows copy, no fragmentation occurs.

      Thanks for all the work!

    53. Gustavo Carreno on January 18, 2009 23:14

      Hey,

I’d like to mention that these last builds, beta 4a and Jan14 night build, have an issue with the progress bars.

Somehow the colour chosen for the progress is the same has the background. The only thing I can see is when there is a diff between the read buffer and the write buffer and that is presented in a different colour.

I’ve tried it with the XP Classic blue theme and the Silver one and both don’t work.

      Cheers,
      Gus

    54. Gustavo Carreno on January 18, 2009 23:20

      Hey,

      Never mind.
I finally went to the options menu and I realized I could change the colours.
Never the less it seams odd that it picked up the wrong colour scheme from other installs.

      Cheers,
      Gus

    55. Smurf-IV on January 23, 2009 21:24

The latest (Jan 14) build gives AVG (8.0.176) a heart attack (XP) and it reports that the teracopy.exe has a “win32/heur” virus..
Nothing else on the machine is reporting this.. just this.

    56. Mah0 on January 25, 2009 18:20

      I see a bug (nightly build jan 14) :

I copy a folder. Copy runs well. In the middle of the copy, I click on “admin”. It launch again the copy where it started, but copy all remaining files without creating folders !
So same generic files like “setup.iss” or “readme.txt” are asked to overwrite or not.

    57. Tom on January 26, 2009 02:17

Could anyone give an update on the fragmentation problem?

      Thanks, Tom

    58. Adrian on January 26, 2009 12:33

@Smurf-IV AVG is awful for false alarms. I make a small utility program that I sell. AVG and Avast! both can have false positives of a newly compiled file that has simple and perfectly standard exe compression enabled. Change your AV program when your license expires is my reccommendation.

    59. Izham on January 26, 2009 12:55

Hey, great program for all that means, especially when used on Windows Vista, it optimized the copy, cut, and paste. Especially when home user can get this for free.. 🙂 thanks for creating such a powerfull yet small footprint programs. Love it!

I love these nightly builds, but should I be concerned about data corruption? Is there ANY REMOTE CHANCE that data corruption can occur when using the nightly builds? Beta versions 2-4 of the latest version have been very buggy for me, while the nightly builds work great.

I was going to purchase this, but it will not install on Windows 7 64. I get an error on install that says: An error occurred while trying th to read the source file: Access is denied. the source file access is denied.

I downloaded it twice, tried installing it to/from different directories, ran as admin, tried to install with compatibility for Vista and XP, no dice.

I installed the non-nightly build with no issues.

    68. Nathaniel on January 31, 2009 18:14

“The latest (Jan 14) build gives AVG (8.0.176) a heart attack (XP) and it reports that the teracopy.exe has a “win32/heur” virus..
Nothing else on the machine is reporting this.. just this.”

      This happens to me too.

    69. Michael on January 31, 2009 20:51

Sometime the Jan 14th nightly build just hangs there when I try to right-click and send a bunch of files from one drive to another. If I copy/paste with Teracopy, it works fine ???

      i’m using Jan 14 build
and there is a very BIG BAG
when you COPY to a specific folder say H:\Try
and before the process ended you MOVE some other files
to the SAME H:\Try destanation folder it marge the operations into 1 window but it COPY not MOVE the new added files
      and worse –

to the SAME H:\Try destanation folder it marge the operations into 1 window but it MOVE not COPY the new added files
      —
it use to open an extra window in previwes version but did not mess up the operation
i think i am gonna downgrade to TeraCopy v2 Beta 3364.exe

    71. Jeff on February 1, 2009 01:27

Made a fix for this error. Copy engine is the same since early v2 betas, so no other problems should arise. Small files (< 10 MB) copied as a single piece - no chances at all for data corruption due to program error. Bigger files are read and written sequentially with very simple and safe algorithm. Of course there is always small possibility of hardware failure or using unreliable media, just perform CRC check when you in doubt.

      Hey Jeff,
finally there’s life in TC again — I’m glad to see that! 🙂

Still, the Vista’s UAC isn’t support as I suggested in my bug-tickets, MD5-functionality is missing and even the copyright-information within the installer (states “2007”) and the program’s “About”-box (states “2007-2008”) isn’t up-to-date.. 🙁

Minor and small problems, I know — but after all, they’re still problems.. 😉

      Best regards,
      Martin

    75. Tom on February 2, 2009 17:38

Nice to have that bug fixed in the last version.

However, I would really like to know if the fragmentation problem is known and if it can/will be fixed. No problem if it cannot be fix, but I just want to know the status.

    76. MilesAhead on February 2, 2009 20:16

I just got a 64 bit system and I’m getting confused as to which betas are 64 bit and which not. Can you clarify? I want to tell others with 64 bit Vista that TeraCopy is a faster copy, esp over the network, but I want to be able to provide a link.

The one I have currently says Jan 14 but it installed in Program Files and has a 64 bit .dll so I figure I got the right one, but it is kind of nebulous what to download.

    77. Ken on February 2, 2009 23:36

A problem with 2.0 Beta 4 (not the nightly builds versions):

I started a TeraCopy MOVE of a large file, and then a TeraCopy COPY that was supposed to run after the MOVE. Normally, the one submitted first runs first, of course.

But in this case, there was not enough disk space. I cleared enough disk space, and then the SECOND TeraCopy (the COPY) started to run first, while the first one waited for it.

I have seen this once before, where some of the TeraCopy operations failed because they were done in the wrong order (the file was no longer there because it was moved by a TeraCopy that was supposed to be later).

Please fix this, so that the waiting TeraCopy operations are always performed in the order submitted.

I am interested in the fragmentation issue aswell (like 75 Tom), and I hope it can be fixed =/

      Hi Jeff,
1st, I would to say that TC is an excellent app., keep on with the good job.
2nd, I would like to report a little bug:
I had couple of times when copying a large amount of big files scattered in directories to a FAT32 files system.
After leaving the PC to do its work for a while, I’ve found out that TC returned an error says it cannot copy a file because it is out of free space.
After examinig the situatation, I’ve found out that there were files larger then 4GB. So TC copied 4GB and ran into FAT32 file size limitation.
So, TC should check the file system it copies to, and then check that the files it needs to copy can be copied to this files system. If not, TC should alert in advance with appropriate message.

    80. vistman on February 5, 2009 16:00

I’m using Vista Ultimate x64 with TC Jan 31 NB and when I set TC to copy/move a larger amount of files/data ie. 250GB from one location to another I simply hangs after let’s say 30% done. Sometime is this less sometime is more, but it ALLWAYS happens.

Any idea why is this happening.

Potential problem with 2.0 Beta (Dec 28)… Opened Music folder under my profile in Vista 64 and did a select all. Then, copied to a shared disk on my network and instead of it copying all of the selected folders, it created a new folder (in the destination director) called “Music” and copied everything there (instead of simply copying all of my music subfolders to the current path).

Hey, just wanted to report that there is an error with TC when you try and drag and drop something from a 7zip window. It cant seem to find the temp folder. Could be a 7zip issue, not sure. Just thought id mention it.

Being in IT for 15 years straight.. this is one of my top 5 apps!
It saved me from massive (1TB+) critical data loss due to a faulty motherboard with USB issues (external drive copy).
For the love of all that is holy.. please continue development of this fantastic program. It can go so much further..
Also if you could add a copy speed throttle and sweeten the front end.. Ill be happy. O and also when you set the verify to ON in the INI it would be better if you can verify after each file as it is copied instead of at the very end once everything has copied over.
My money is coming your way shortly.. just do some updates!

Why Teracopy dont have Bookmarks funtion to replace Last Used.

    90. Fairway on February 12, 2009 00:23

Fantastic application, been using teracopy for over a year, best data movement app around for Windows.
      Suggestions:
      * Add a Test operation (in addition to move and copy). Rather than doing copy-“skip all” to find if there has been something that has changed on the target, test would be very useful.
      * I frequently copy 10,000+ files/directories and it is really difficult to find if anything has gone wrong/CRC mismatch, would be great if a summary window could show the paths or if there could be a filter for the main copy window to show errors (so you can re-try etc)

      Keep it up! Thanks!

    91. merlin on February 12, 2009 05:25

I also love TeraCopy. I recently upgraded to Vista x64 and am having similar issues as John R. It does not add items to the Explorer context menu. Still, keep rolling out the terrific updates.

    92. merlin on February 12, 2009 05:30

I think I may have found the reason why it doesn’t show up in the context menu on 64-bit systems. It looks like the dll that is registered as the context menu handler (TeraCopyExt.dll) is 32-bit. Can you look into this? Thanks in advance!

    93. Jeff on February 12, 2009 05:39

Yes, I’ll need to write a new 64-bit dll in C (TeraCopyExt.dll written in Delphi, which can produce 32 code only).

I’ll post a new NB in a few minutes.. done. Sorry if I don’t answer to everybody, but I note all comments and will implement as much features as I can in the nearest or future versions.

    94. Jeff on February 12, 2009 08:36

I just got a 64 bit system and I’m getting confused as to which betas are 64 bit and which not.

64 bit systems support is present since v2 beta 3. TeraCopy itself is 32 bit, 64 bit dll is needed to intercept copy/move operations.

      * Add a Test operation (in addition to move and copy). Rather than doing copy-”skip all” to find if there has been something that has changed on the target, test would be very useful.

Currently you can add files, select target folder and click Test to compare. Or just start copy, click Cancel and then click Test.

      * I frequently copy 10,000+ files/directories and it is really difficult to find if anything has gone wrong/CRC mismatch, would be great if a summary window could show the paths or if there could be a filter for the main copy window to show errors (so you can re-try etc)

I’m planning some kind of separate “troubleshooter” window. Right now you can use Clean button to leave only problem files and click Copy/Move again to restart operation.

OK – I have have had great luck with this applocation – except on x64 XP.

Please check this TeraCopy64.dll with Dependency Walker and also take a look at Windows Event Log. I’ve tested it on XP Professional x64 SP2.

      Dear Jeff,

In Windows Vista or 7 when you copy or move a file to another folder that has a file with the same name you get the box that pops up asking if you want to “Move but keep both files,Don’t move or Move and replace.

Now I know Teracopy has this also but I would like if Teracopy also had little pictures of the files that you are moving just like how Windows Vista and 7 have it.

Also I would like if Teracopy had “Move but keep both files” just like Windows Vista and 7 does.

Any chance of adding these to the Teracopy “File Already Exists” box?

      Thanks 🙂

Something that I would like to see is when you do a copy via shell integration, have it open a different dialog box by default (or at least in the options) instead of queuing it inside the same dialog.

I do alot of copying between my different computers and it is an annoyance to have it all dump into the same queue instead of running as different instances.. mostly because the limiter is the speed of each pc’s hard drive, not the bandwidth of the network.

    101. mai9 on February 14, 2009 22:51

I do prefer different instances aswell. In my case for “psycological” reasons. If I order two copy jobs, I want to see two windows. Otherwise I lose my path and I don’t know what I am doing, if I did that once, twice or it’s already done but got trapped inside a previous instance.

    102. Bruce on February 15, 2009 00:43

Just a quick note. I was copying over a 4 gig file to a 16 gig thumb drive today. It said I was out of room on the target (still had 5 gig left) and needed to free up 354 meg. When I deleted an extra gig of the drive, Tera copy did not move on. The only thing I could do is skip or cancel. Skip said I could resume the copy later, but did nothing when i pressed skip. I pressed cancel and that stoped the copy dialog, but there is no button to “resume”. Is this a bug?

Thanks again for a great tool

    104. Michael S. on February 20, 2009 03:11

When I work with my Vista x64 and TeraCopy Pro beta Feb 12 for a while, and look to Process Explorer or so, I see about 10 TeraCopy Processes, even when I not started the program at all.

I think it’s because of the copy handler replacing that I set at TeraCopy, but it’s not very normal.

Could the processes be better terminated? Maybe some trouble is caused when I not terminate them manually from time to time (because I forget), and there is kind of overload (sorry for my bad knowledge) troubling the system, resultimg in subltle errors, like it is having too much to do.

      Best regards,

      Michael S.

      Is it a bug?

    107. mai9 on February 25, 2009 03:32

102 Bruce, the problem is probably the FAT32 in your thumb drive, try formating it with NTFS. As you can see, the “Feb 12” build should give a warning.

    108. Sparky on February 26, 2009 05:04

      Hi
Excellent program. I am a proud TC Pro user.

I had a nasty episode where I lost som files because I misinterpreted how TC do a copy with replace.

It seems to me that when I opted to replace – TC deleted the file first then started the copy (which I elected to cancel). I assumed that the target was still there since I aborted the operation, I deleted the source and found the target was gone as well.

Let me throw in an idea here: What if TC (after you elected to replace) copied the file with a temporary name. Leaving the target file intact. If the copy went well, you rename the target to another temporary name. Rename the copied file to the proper name, and finally deleted the target file. I know it takes double space during the process, but it is so much safer. You could even have a system crash anywhere in the process and not loose any data – how about that? Could this method maybe be an option? Call it the Paranoia Mode if you like it 😉

A shorter version is: Copy with temporary name, if copy ok, delete target then rename to proper name. Not so robust, but one fileoperation less.

    110. MilesAhead on March 1, 2009 07:28

Hmmmm I just upgraded my 2 PC network to gigabit wired and I’m seeing some weird things. I was using TeraCopy with 700 MB file as a benchmark to tune things. What’s strange is if I use TeraCopy while I’m on the “Left” PC to copy a file from the “Right” PC it screams! Anywhere from 44 to 50 MB/sec. When I copy the same file back the other way I can get as low as 10 MB/sec. I set network buffers in TeraCopy to 128 MB to maximize throughput. I don’t have TeraCopy as default shell copy handler. Here’s the weird part though. If I use the regular shell copy in the slow direction I’m getting about 35 MB/sec. Go figure!!
It’s like some kind of mysticism here. I can’t understand why the hardware would care which direction the copy goes.

    111. Michael on March 1, 2009 09:09

How do you change the buffer size?

    112. MilesAhead on March 1, 2009 19:56

@Michael search for Options.ini file and if there’s no [buffer] section you can add it:

      [Buffer]
      Default=1024
      SameDrive=16384
      BetweenHDD=16384
      Network=131072

btw the really weird thing is I tried just using the standard Vista64 left mouse button drag shell copy going in the “fast” direction and I got peaks of 100 MB/sec with steady rate over 70 MB/sec transferring a 700 MB file!! Guess until I know what’s what I’m using shell copy in Vista64!

    113. Marko on March 1, 2009 22:26

How close is the release date of the next stable/beta version of TeraCopy? I keep checking this blog about it, so I thought I should ask.

How do I clear the copy / move the file history does not record or copy / Mobile Record

    115. Will on March 3, 2009 00:57

Anytime a file is resumed the log file says it has resumed the first file that was resumed, not the name of the real file that was really resumed.

So it’s impossible to see what files really where resumed when reading log file since only the first once is logged correctly.

    116. Will on March 3, 2009 03:41

      Hi,

      A few requests..

1.) Ability to reorder items sure would be nice.

2.) Remove annoying horizontal scroll bar when it’s not required. If you make columns right size it goes away, but the sizes are not remembered, it forgets when you minimize the window. Also, forgets when going between “less” and “more” views. Ouch, please fix.

3.) Remember window size, window location, and size of columns. By default the window should open centered screened. Also, remember “state”: Has the more view been enabled (as in the more button was clicked) or is using still using less view (as in the more button was NOT clicked).

4.) Do nothing if user double clicks on “title bar”.. That or better yet allow user to maximize window. Looks fine maximized, so why is it not allowed now? Easy enough to force the window maximized using task manager as it is.

5.) Ability to reorder columns. Along with ability to choose which columns to display/hide.

6.) Remember if close, test, and shutdown options are enabled or not.

7.) Open the “options” window center screened. And why is it called “options” in the context menu when the title of the screen is preferences. Should match..

8.) Ability to “Resume All” from the start. Should be added as a “File Replace Mode” as found on the top right corner. Should not be grayed out just because current file does not need resuming.

Very useful when attempting to copy files from a dieing drive. Often I’m able to successfully copy a few hundred files before it fails. Currently as it stands I have to start another file first and cancel it just so that the “Resume All” option appears. An annoying step that should not be required. This is required since if you do not do it this way you would have to click the “Skip” button a few hundred times until the “Resume All” button would appear, assuming there are any files that need to be resumed.

9.) Remember if “Always On Top” option is enabled or not.

10.) For the portable version perhaps it would be wise to say that in the about screen. About window should also open centered.

Also, when is a new portable version going to be released?

      That’s all for now. 😉

      Thanks,

      Will

When I select the files and choose to move them, TeraCopy opens and says that I need more space. I can get the copy going by clicking on Ignore but I find it annoying that it will not detect free disk space properly.

      Any clue?

      Hey Jeff.

I’m transferring files from a virtual PC in VMWare Workstation to my host windows, and Teracopy doesn’t seem to be able to do that, comes up with an error. Only the default windows explorer can do it.

      Can this be fixed?
      Cheers

      Added: Favorite target folders [Pro]

This is a good idea, but it would be a killer feature if it was also integrated in the shell explorer context menu, for copy & move.

Anyway thanks for this great software, can’t live without it.

I’m not sure but I think the processed files cause fragmentation. Do you think you can work on that too so the processed files would be in one piece, if possible?

I’m starting to wonder if the GUI on TC is hiding some basic design flaws underneath.

    134. Logan on March 15, 2009 05:06

Eh….forgive my ignorance but doesn’t the statement ‘nightly builds’ suggest that there would be a new build every night just like with ‘vlc’ from videolan. Change the title or else do exactlt what it states & release a nightly build, not release one every few weeks or so etc. I mean the last build was on Feb 12th, c’mon where’s the rest of the builds?

It’s a great program & I purchased it…….but it still has a few bugs to be ironed out as have been pointed out above.
Is there any ETA on a Final version? or at least give us some indication of when to expect the next beta release build/show us any or all progress to date.
Give us a sign that this project is still alive as there’s been no word from you jeff since the last build on the 12th.

    136. tunghoy on March 17, 2009 09:33

@TheSilent — now I see what you mean.

On my 64-bit Vista Ultimate tablet, TC works fine, but this evening, I installed TC on a client’s machine that’s running Vista Home Premium 64-bit, and found the same problem you did: it wouldn’t install as the default copy/move handler and wouldn’t show up on the right-click menus. And that’s also after installing it as the Administrator. TC worked only if I dragged files into its window.

TC was the very first application I installed on the brand-new computer (just unboxed it). So the problem might be with Vista Home x64 and not Vista Ultimate x64. That’s weird.

    137. Jay on March 18, 2009 01:15

I found a possible bug with TeraCopy’s handling of Vista junction points (symbolic links to other folders that function as if they were actually that folder). When a junction is moved with the OS, it just moves the link and retains the junction to the target folder. When moved with TeraCopy, it appears the contents of the junction’s target are moved instead of just the junction. The junction then becomes cyclical and breaks it’s original functionality. Someone moving an entire folder that contain junctions (of which the user may be unaware) could cause problems.

Problem using ethernet external hard drive.
When I try to copy files to a Lacie ethernet drive, Teracopy reports:

If I move a file from my Program Files folder on my C drive the files move to the new location but the same file also still remains in the Program Folder.
      Can this be fixed?

I’ll fix it, TC should perform elevation to admin mode in this case.

When I open a compressed file in 7-zip and drag & drop a file on desktop, TeraCopy results in error (status column):
“Open Error: The system cannot find the path specified.”

I’ll disable handling copy/move from 7-zip, it make no sense anyway. Files copied twice, to the temp folder and then to destination folder. Use “Extract to…” instead of drag’n’drop to speed it up.

Let me throw in an idea here: What if TC (after you elected to replace) copied the file with a temporary name. Leaving the target file intact. If the copy went well, you rename the target to another temporary name. Rename the copied file to the proper name, and finally deleted the target file.

Yes, it will be much safer.

    150. Pavlov on March 28, 2009 20:27

Great tool. I’m using the Beta of Feb, 12, and I’m really impressed by its easy handling and fast processing.

Regardless of its high usability I think there is one more thing to improve: I assume every user would like to find out what files have made problems during the process. These files could be identified very easily if one could click a column’s header for sorting purposes, just like in Windows Explorer, so every item that wasn’t OK appears at the top of the list.
I often copy/move thousands of files at once and it is very hard to find out what files/folders haven’t been handled the way they should.
Thanks for considering this for the next Beta.

Jeff, I’m getting ‘blank’ date/time stamps on directories when t/c has a queue of files that are going/coming from multiple places.

It looks as if t/c doesn’t properly complete a task (closing out files, etc) before moving on to the next copy task. If multiple copies are coming/going from the same source/target, this does NOT happen.

This is repeatable for me. Happens both on local copies as well as UNC path copies.

    153. ruben on March 30, 2009 22:44

Wait, if i understood correctly the file you want to replace would still be on the system during this process, consuming mbs?
What if you dont have enough space, say if you want to replace a file on a flash drive? Or if you want to replace a 4 gb file on a partition with has only 2 gb available?

      Hi Jeff,

What a great little utility you have created! Lately I have used it exclusively when moving or copying files between my computers, usb discs, server and NAS. I have reviewed several other copy/move utilities but yours just get the job done easily!

One thing I would really love to see in the coming version is a build in “autoskip version” and “status/error list”. Often I am moving huge amount of data (more than just a few GB), getting to bed, getting up in the morning just to discover that TeraCopy has stopped for some reason. It would be very nice if TeraCopy just skipped those files, and created a list of unmoved files. Currently I am using only the free version, but that freature I just mentioned would make me pay for the pro version.

Looking forward to see if/when that feature is implemented. Thanks for a truly great utility!

      /Jacob

first copy oder move some files…

if you try later to copy/move files to the same folder with the option “Last Used” – but the last used folder no longer exists, TeraCopy will stuck…

it qould be helpful, if the folder no longer exists – to force TeraCopy to create em…
btw – thx for your good work – thumbs up – keep goning…

    157. Anonymous on April 7, 2009 06:50

“It would be very nice if TeraCopy just skipped those files, and created a list of unmoved files. Currently I am using only the free version, but that freature I just mentioned would make me pay for the pro version.”

You would have another paying customer right here if you did that. Auto-skip is a must.

And multi-threaded copying. Why hasn’t anyone mentioned that? Microsoft has a utility (Rich Copy) that does it and people love it, really speeds up the process.

I also think the option to do CRC check after copying each file would be handy (especially if it was muti-threaded, do CRC while copying next file, should reduce total time needed to do a copy _ crc).

And I haven’t tried it yet, but it would be nice if it could take the length of the destination directory path and then add that to the length of each file name (plus sub folders) that will be copied to determine if any will go past the file system’s maximum path length (and same thing for folder depth). Then it would notify you before it started copying so you wouldn’t have to move everything around after it’s done.

And how about this: option to transfer files based on size, smallest to largest. Small files copy faster than big ones. And directories based on total size of files inside (when copying a folder, pre-create all the sub-folders then copy the contents, or something like that).

Here is one little annoyance I’ve discovered: If I start copying something and decide that I don’t want to anymore, the items that were copied already are still there (which is fine and all) but I have no option to delete the destination folder.

BTW, has anyone checked to see if it works with Unlocker? http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ I don’t have it installed ATM.

    158. Brent Newland on April 7, 2009 09:51

I don’t know if you considered this or not, but I think it would be best if you let the free version upgrade for free, but every time there was an update (and every 30 days, whichever is less) it displayed a pop-up suggesting that you pay for the premium features. Avira Anti-Vir does this and it’s great. Of course, Avira updates nightly, but even that frequently isn’t annoying. This program would only have pop-ups once a month, so no one would mind. And on the plus side you’re advertising to those people that many more times, making them remember that your product was made for free and enticing more sales.

    159. ruben on April 7, 2009 23:52

I dunno if it has already been implemented but a nice feature would be for the program to display the drive size you are sending the files to. It would be really usefull on flash drives or micro sd cards where you dont have a lot of space and want to transfer things fast.

    160. ruben on April 7, 2009 23:55

Another nice feature would be a tray icon that display the percentage of ttrasfer.

    163. Nick on April 15, 2009 06:11

When the destination folder is full, TerraCopy displays “Write error: The system cannot find the file specified”

This is very confusing as, it gives no hints as to what the problem is.

Could you please make it say something like “Write error: Destination drive is full.” like Windows copy/move does?

I recently found teraCopy and it is just amazing.
It does what I want for years.
I had some suggestions to make it better but didnt know where I should post it (didnt find a forum)

      – At the moment when you copy files from drive 1 to drive to and at the same time from drive 1 (or drive 3) to drive 4
      the second copy is paused,
if it is possible to see if there is no read/write at that moment to that drive start the second copy immediatly so dont pause it

      – If possible I would like to see more opties for the layout, more color opties or maybe skins? What language is it written in? (in our company we use http://www.devexpress.com for .net with skins, anchoring, …)

      – I dont know if this is possible but I would like to anchor/lock copy windows together (something like panels in flash designer)
So: you have to copy windows, you move window 2 below window 1, it locks to the window, when dragging window 1, window 2 moves with it,
when dragging window 2 it unlocks from window 1

The problem is you have one developer (with no staff) working on several programs. Direct Folders just came out with a new version, so it is very easy to figure out why there is nothing going on with TeraCopy.

I have been running into an annoying issue for windows when copying over the network when copying 20+ GB. I keep getting AM Open error: Windows cant find the network path, yet I am able to tunnel to it with no problems at about the 10 GB mark.

One other good enhancement I thought about is that TeraCopy does not seem to list the destination of the files which is useful for when your doing massive copies of similarly named files and need to know which instance is which.

just a suggestion for a new feature:
when copying the files and hitting a “overwrite window”. show an small info whether the files are of equal size and show a progress that tells if the analysis of the two files are identical(it can be shown progressively so it says that the first 12% of both files are equal. on the first differenece it simply shows “different content”)

      i have a question.

we have tested & used teracopy2.4b with MetaSAN( SAN Sharing software,
      Tiger-technology, http://www.tiger-technology.com)

      some error happened.

after installed teracopy to one of SAN member, others couldn’t copy
from local to SAN volume(Local), because there is some file modification.

tested file : 500MB Tiff image file

after uninstalled Teracopy, teracopy still affect SAN volume.

next is the reply about this error from Tiger’s support team.
      ***********************************************************************
The errors that you are getting although TeraCopy is uninstalled are probably because its deinstallation didn’t go right and the drivers, or at least some of them, are still on your machine. To remove them you will have to contact TeraCopy support for a detailed manual uninstallation instruction. Another way, and probably the better one, is to reinstall the OS, because this will wipe out all drivers.
      Tihomir Raykov,
      Tiger Technology Support
      ************************************************************************

plaese, let me know how can i remove teracopy completely without OS reinstallation & SAN volume format ?

Just released a new build :p I can call it final version, works good on my systems (Windows XP, Windows 7 32/64 bit). Question is, does it work for you? Let me know if you’ll find bugs. Please report as much detail as possible + steps to reproduce.

Anybody know a good bugtracker? Also separate poll for features would be great. It should be open, i.e one person adds a feature and then everybody can vote.

      jbshin :

plaese, let me know how can i remove teracopy completely without OS reinstallation & SAN volume format ?

Just delete TeraCopy folder in Program Files (restart may be needed).

Wow, thanks a lot for the new build. Works perfectly here. 7-Zip bug fixed (/me happy) and wonderful integration into Windows 7.

      @Jeff
One issue I’m seeing in Windows 7 is that the UAC prompts are not being correctly handled. For example when I use native Win 7 to drag and drop items on the Windows start menu to a different location on the menu, I get an elevated UAC prompt and then the move goes ahead when I click on continue. With TeraCopy set as the default copy/move handler, I don’t get any UAC prompts, it just errors out with a status of “Target: Access is denied”. I’m not sure if this is the same behaviour in Vista. My take is TeraCopy should either do the copy/move silently using elevated permissions or ask the user for permission like the native copy handler.

    197. Ben on June 2, 2009 23:28

Reproducable bug: (using W7 X64 but same bug happened with Vista X64)

Moving directory from network drive to C:\directory
Moving directory from C:\directory2 to C:\directory

      At the same time…,

Causes the first operation to complete but hang at the end. The second operation never starts and the program loops forever and requires to be shut down via taskmanager.

    198. HB on June 3, 2009 21:45

Any chance of making the windows not auto cascade? Since I have the transfer window at the lower left of the screen right above the startmenu, they keep crawling underneath the taskbar.

    199. Pas B on June 3, 2009 22:00

The following problem was observed using executables downloaded directly from or linked to from your website.

I tried the 2.3 portable beta, to evaluate the program without performing an install. It was great, until I investigated why certain file copies were failing repeatedly. Teracopy would find a size mismatch. Using a utility to run a CRC-32 hash against the copy, I found the has did not match the one that Teracopy calculated and displayed for the source.

The failed copies turned out to be for .exe files. Examining source and copy in winmerge, I found that the copy was indeed altered; there was additional content glued onto the end.

With some hesitation, I tried the full installation 2.4 beta. I observed the same behavior.

I can provide examples if you want. I’m not sophisticated enough to analyze the altered content of the copies. If you email me, please stick “teracopy” in the subject line.

    200. Pas B on June 3, 2009 22:02

      @Pas B
I should add that I do not observed modification of .exe files upon copy when I used the built-in Windows Explorer copy function (having disabled Teracopy’s pre-emption of same), copy via SyncBackSE, or other file copying functionality. The behavior appears to be restricted to Teracopy and not inherited e.g. from an underlying malware infection.

    201. Jeff on June 4, 2009 02:25

TeraCopy writes data in big chunks and then trims the file to original size. Perhaps antivirus locks files and prevents trimming.. Please test this version. BTW empty file ‘Portable’ will switch TC to portable mode (disable writing to Application Data).

    202. Kane3162 on June 5, 2009 00:18

I normally use batch files for network copying (i use an admin station to start the batch file on all 30 PC’s), is their a way I can use TeraCopy instead of batch files? or a way to make it use TeraCopy instead of the standard FTP (not meant in its actual definition) IE CMD entry’s i can use??

      Thanks

Using May 31 nightly Pro license with W7 x86 RC, the target destination for “copy to/move to” options get messed up with weird characters like }\
and or other random junk characters. Any ideas?

    204. mai9 on June 5, 2009 17:14

      @Kane3162
reading the file “Directory Opus.txt” you can read the instruction used, try messing with it and you’ll probably succeed 😉

      %ProgramFiles%\TeraCopy\TeraCopy.exe Copy *{allfilepath|filem} {destpath}

    205. Jak on June 5, 2009 19:42

i have seen that when teracopy is the default copy handler and files from recycle bin are dragged into a folder on the pc,(not restored), the file names change into a garbage value from their actual names..it would be easier to identify them if they remained same when copy pasting into some folder after deleting a file.
also, if a copy from, say a network lan drive is started along with a local copy to a disk, only one will progress at a time, even though effectively both could be going at the same time without dropping performance rates as the ethernet speeds or wireless speeds are much lesser than what a SATA or IDE can handle, in this context can there be a provision that teracopy checks the position of file and accordingly copies multiple files at a time or just one?..

    206. Pas B on June 5, 2009 22:55

      @Jeff
Thank you for the response. I downloaded the latest nightly from the link above on this page [Version 2.0 nightly build (May 31)] and tried installing it. While the downloaded files scanned clean with AVG and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, upon installing, AVG 8.0 flagged the executable as infected. I understand from earlier comments that this may be a false positive, but I’m just not comfortable proceding at this point. If/When that issue gets cleared up, I may give TeraCopy another go.

I am curious, though. I only observed executables encountering the problem I described. Per your hypothesis, that would mean that the anti-virus program causing the problem is only locking up executables or some subclass of files that it identifies for different handling (as opposed to, say, text files, JPG files, etc.)?

    207. Anon on June 6, 2009 02:36

I do not think that the issue will ever get cleared. The anti-virus are flagging the file due to the packer being used. Of course only executable files will be flagged, since only they are “executed”. Other files are “interpreted”.

      I had 2.0b4 previously installed.

I installed Windows on a new drive (due to disk crash) and installed this new 5-31 version instead.

The only annoyance is that now I cannot get TeraCopy to default to stay open after a successful operation (I prefer to verify that the CRC’s checked myself personally, since I have known running applications to simply vanish without a trace on occasion, so closing by itself does not indicate “success” to me).

The new version always come up with “Close” in bold, whereas previously I did not have to manually click it each time. Am I missing something, or had the default changed ?

    210. Silver on June 6, 2009 05:28

I seem to have some issue with dragging and dropping files into Teracopy GUI on Vista Home Premium. No matter what files I dragged into it, nothing happens even though the “drag & drop” icon is showing as I do it. Actually, thinking about it, it might have been a Vista problem as many apps that I used to use which I can just dragged and dropped files into no longer works. even when I had already elevated the permissions.

    211. fardeen on June 6, 2009 15:12

thank u for new version. the Progress indicator in Windows 7 Taskbar is wonderful nice job. but i would like a better way for teracopy to manage all its windows that is open right now it is not working fine. why not have a tab feature that groups all teracopy copy windows and the user can easily select which windows to start resume or pause. a bit like messenger plus does with windo0ws live messenger for tabbed chats. that would be awesome. and also is it possible to change how teracopy looks? make it a little more pretty for vista and windows 7 user for the final version. and most important please fix the uac prompt before each file copy or move. it is annoying to click uac prompt each time when i simply have to move a file from one drive to another. and these files aren’t even system file. i prefered the run as admin option better as previous version had. it will dramatically reduce any annoyance, and u could make only files that is copied to c:windows or c:program files require UAC prompt, or u could make exe extention require uac. the rest normal files could be copied without these admin priviledge. for xp users it is oaky but for us vista or windows 7 user it is annoying. and i don’t want to turn my uac off. so natively if u could have this feature teracopy would be so much better. thanks a lot and keep on the food job. any chance we have a final nightly build like an RC version of teracopy before it gets final?

I still see the fragmentation problem in the May 31 build. It really is important for me to get it fix.

here’s the users’ quest for it:

      http://blog.codesector.com/2008/12/27/teracopy-2-nightly-builds/#comment-1251

It bothers me a lot that the original copy from windows doesn’t fragmentate, but TeraCopy does. (I checked that myself).

Thanks Jeff for the program. And please, please, please: check this!

    215. Aarynb on June 6, 2009 20:58

I’m also hoping for the fragmentation problem to be fixed; I just tried the application today and while the home version is free, I love it so much that I plan on purchasing it in the future to support it (though with the size of files I move around on my storage drive, the fragmentation issue is highly problematic)

    216. Jeff on June 6, 2009 22:16

I’ve added SetFileValidData function yesterday, so there should be less problems with fragmented files. Also copying big files on flash drive seems to be little faster. I’ll post the new version in a few days.

    217. Ken on June 7, 2009 01:35

” Changed: When moving, source files are deleted immediately (after comparing size). ”

Jeff, can you clarify what this means exactly ?

And, also please respond concerning the change in behavior between 2b4 and 5-31 in terms of closing by default, and whether is a hidden option to change that back. Thanks!

in May 31 build, TeraCopy can’t move file in same drive instant like windows’ move funtion.
eg. I want to move “google.mp4” in f:\temp to f:\news, If I use Windows’ move funtion it only change in file index. But if I use TeraCopy to move my file, it move all file. It much slower than Windows’

this new seem faster still it has not reduce the annoying uac prompt every time by running the admin. jeff what are u doing man. its really annoying to use teracopy in vista or windows 7 unless u disable uac. moving simple files or copying files requires admin priviledge now. please change that. add the option run as admin back please its rare that we actually need to move system or program files etc. only in these instances will we need admin. make it as it was before. it was better. thats feedback man!!! also there is a little bug i think sometimes copying files just feezes for no reason. then i have to cancel and try again. it does not happen all the time but it does happen. i dont think teracopy is complete to be released as a final version this month. new nighty builds yes but not final.

    229. fardeen on June 11, 2009 16:00

also sometimes teracopy wrongly shows the copying speed sometimes. copy files sometimes make the speed becomes 125mb/s for a few seconds which is false especially on my usb drive whose max speed is only 10mb/s

To be consistent with other options, “NoClose” should also be an .ini file option as well.

In fact, when TeraCopy is started from Context Menu or Drag-and-Drop, doesn’t it run from DLL and not command line at all ?

i don’t want to complicate things just want it to integrated with some kind of UAC fix. the run as admin was perfect don’t know why they removed it. i also use windows 7 so it is the better UAC

    238. Prasad on June 15, 2009 22:48

      @vt
I have tried both those so-called UAC fixes, and I can tell you they do not work especially on Windows 7.

    239. Jeff on June 15, 2009 23:50

TC runs as admin only if you copy to UAC-protected folders (\Program Files, \Windows and root of drive).

Just installed bug tracker at http://bugs.codesector.com.

    240. Ken on June 17, 2009 01:53

Jeff, thanks for the latest June 16 version with NoClose as .ini file option and long path name handling.
The only question is what is the new behavior of TeraCopy if MaxPathLimit is 1 and what is the behavior if it is 0. In other words, what does it do when it encounters an excessively long path ?

    241. Jeff on June 17, 2009 02:08

If MaxPathLimit=1, TC will not copy files if destination path longer than 255 characters (marks as error and skip these files). If set to 0, TC will copy all files (not recommended for WinXP, better use with Windows 7).

    242. Sevan on June 17, 2009 02:52

Umm… not sure if I’m not looking in the right place, but the download link is still pointing to the June 10 installer (and the filesize is the same… so I’m assuming it’s not the new “June 16” version).

If you could update the link, that’s be great 🙂

    243. Ken on June 17, 2009 10:16

I think that it is the same link every time, and the changes were small enough not to change the file size.

    244. sparky on June 17, 2009 11:42

If you bother to run an md5 or sha1 hash on the two files, you’ll see that they are different.

Is anyone having a problem installing the nightlies on Vista Home Premium?

    245. Sevan on June 17, 2009 14:15

      The download links at:

      http://www.codesector.com/files/teracopy2nightly.exe &
      http://www.teracopy.com/files/teracopy2nightly.exe

point to two different files (with the http://www.teracopy.com/…/ having the June 16th and the codesector.com/…/ which is the link in this post pointing to the June 10th version). The installer says very clearly what version you are installing when you run it. The June 16th identifies itself as such in the text at the beginning of the installer. If anyone wanted to check out the new build you can get it at the teracopy.com… address until Jeff has a chance to double check that both links are pointing to the same version of the file.

    246. Jeff on June 17, 2009 15:53

Looks like cache working somewhere. You can fool it by adding “?anything” after URL, e.g., try this link http://www.codesector.com/files/teracopy2nightly.exe?asd

    247. Andrew on June 17, 2009 23:55

Minor bugs (using XP): If I copy a file in the same folder the standard windows name is “Copy of X” or “Copy (2) of X” not “X_2” or “X_3”. Also when I copy/move a file into a window or desktop, the icon of the copy should stay where I drop it, but TC puts it in the next “free icon space” not the position where I wanted it. Another issue, if I change desktop size (laptop/large screen) then TC may open beyond/off the screen if it was there before. I remember a program like this for MacOS years ago and it’s nice to have a windows version.

Some folks say they notice that teracopy is slower than vista : I encounter the same behaviour, copying from one LacieBigdisk to another, on daisy chain with firewire ; vista was more than three time faster. I was using 1.22, so I drag the cursor to 20Mo, it raised the speed four times! teracopy becamed 20% faster than vista. Continue experiencing leaded me to drag the cursor back, 10Mo, 2MO, 1Mo, right functiun ; I attempted to drag to 256Ko, the initial setting, and “splash”, vista told me teracopy was crashed, and “click on this button to close it”. Reducing buffer size “on the fly” is very “dangerous” ; a fix that could be easy done : desabling dragging cursor below 1Mo when a copy/move is perform. I tried pro version a few hours later, till registration informations were pending for a while, and then “oh, no!No cursor!” I red the comments, aha, there is an ini. file : a value of 250Ko is set for operating from two physical drives! I put 20480 instead : speed increased two times and a half ; not four times, because it was on a file that o&odefrag was infinetly trying to defrag. My idea was to copy it to another drive, and backing it to its original location to resolve the fragmentation by another method. It did not success, because file was “locked”, if I have understood correctly what Jeff replies to one who complains that moving into a same drive is a slow task with Teracopy.
I installed “unlocker”, as Jeff suggested : what a good soft ; I managed to erased a flashware plugin that vista refused to delete, telling me “the files are open in another application”. Those files were not in use!!! But they were “locked”. Rebooting never changed anything ; but “unlocker” yes! It put those files into recycler, and then, they were “magically” “unlocked”!!! I can do what I want with those files, including restoring to their location, and they remain “unlocked”.
It seems confusing that files become “locked”, and never “unlocked”, even after reboot of PC. I found out windows is little bugy, and let a file “locked” after a crash of an application : a file I was downloading was “locked” after the crash of the downloader accelerator. O&Odefrag keeped on infinetely trying to move this file, noway! I restart the downloader accelerator “bingo”, when the file got finished, O&Odefrag got suddenly able to manage the file! xp sp3 involve functiunality vista-like, so applications become owner of their files, till they say to windows : “ok, you can do what you want, I terminated the job!”. If the application never resumes its job because you found out to definitively uninstall it : missed, the file can be deleted, if read-only flag is not set, but if set, noway to erase the file, move its chunks with a defrag utility, and so on… Fortunately, “unlocker” resolves the problem, thanks to Jeff who told us to check this “great” freeware!!!
For myself, I use O&Odefrag to locate “locked” chunks, and I double-click on one chunk, so O&O tells me which file it belongs, then delete with “unlocker”, restoring from recycler, and “few”, one problem is solved ; reiterating does the remaining job!!! (of course, I try first with rebooting the PC to limit the number of chunks pending “locked”)!
Some may say : “I got no application crashed into vista, it cannot come this way on my PC…”. Are you sure? there is an application always running under vista as well as xp sp1, sp2, sp3, it is “explorer”. This stuff always “crashses” when my CPU overheat, and then a file under selection by explorer.exe is locked ; my vista keeps two occurence of explorer.exe running together : to close one and switch very quickly on the other? Never mind, it leads to “locked” chuncks, that remain “locked”, specially if a patch is applied by windows update wich change digital finger-print of explore.exe : when restarting, explorer.exe cannot unlock the chunks, they belong to another application! (some worms try to imitate the name of a regular application, or infect it, so the “finger-print” is changed, and managements rights could block acces to the file ; good ideas often turn out into nightmare for users, in case of security!!!)

Great Software. So light yet so effective. One suggestion though, I know teracopy adjusts buffersize automatically if destination size is a network drive. In such a case, by default it keeps 256KB as buffer size, I have seen that this slow down copy when compared with windows (inbuilt) copy (this is when you are copying to a machine connected to LAN). I had to manually increase the buffer to get a good speed of copy. Can this adjustment in buffer size be done automatically.

    250. LeKing on June 18, 2009 20:54

      @Vishal
Yes, parameter is in the ini file “Options.ini” : Network=256 (by default)

    251. Ken on June 18, 2009 22:52

Jeff – there is no documentation for the [Buffer] section in Options.ini, MilesAhead above recommends to add:

      [Buffer]
      Default=1024
      SameDrive=16384
      BetweenHDD=16384
      Network=131072

Can you comment on whether this Options.ini section is actually supported and whether the above is advisable ?

This settings works in v1.22 only.

Uploaded new version, added 64-bit dll for TC entry in Explorer context menu. After right click on a file or folder you should see “TeraCopy…” command in context menu.

License key will convert TC 2.0 (any version) into Pro version and will unlock file list management (delete/rearrange) and favorite target folders. You can also search Whatsnew.txt for [Pro] remarks.

I see that the Favorite Target Folders is supposed to be implemented on February 12 for Pro, but I do not see any target folder change when I added the Pro License Key. (A clue about that might have been that I asked for Favorite Target Folders for Pro in every message I sent you over the past month !! Clearly, that indicated that I did not notice any change. Can you explain how Favorite Target Folders work ? [b] Note that I only start Teracopy Pro from the Explorer Context Menu[/b].

jeff before u release ths iteracopy as a full version please remove this annoying run as admin everytime u start copying files to usb drive etc. everytime it ask for uac prompt even when i send simple avi or doc files like that. make it use uac only when it is really needed, copying files to program files, windows. well drive c: stuff, the rest no need of this .please also i got error when i try to copy files at times, get error that it can’t read the file etc and the copying freezes. have to cancel and start again. its annonying, but previous versions worked fine.

      Ken :

Can you explain how Favorite Target Folders work ? Note that I only start Teracopy Pro from the Explorer Context Menu.

Added separate app for this, hope it’s better than sub-menus. Favorite folders can be added by clicking on target folder name in TC and selecting “Add …”.

I though Windows not allows writing to a root of usb drives. But they instead disabled autorun on removable drives (except optical) in Windows 7. Good idea, but it should be done seven years ago in XP SP1.

My Teracopy app says PRO in the title bar, and this Favorites feature is still not enabled, so I think that you never actually enabled it. The new separate app says “Available in Tera Copy Pro” and does not do anything when you click in the left part of the app…

hey jeff small bugs to be reported, the uac prompt is less annoying when copying files on usb drive etc so its nice, but i copied a zip file to the root of drive c: and then i drag and drop it on the desktop, i get error message 38 and 39 at times. then when i click on okay, the copying starts but the source is not deleted. my best bet is that in drive c root all operations should run as admin. this bug needs fixing. also a little bug i lauched a number of teracopy i can’t start copying or moving flies until i first pause the first operation, and then teracopy allows me to copy the files. also, when i try to move or copy files . i get a new teracopy copy window of the previous first problem and it says teracopy can’t find the file specified. everytime i try to copy something i get the same window. its annoying, i think its a bug. please fix it before the final release please

    263. Silver on June 28, 2009 06:13

Wow, the new version is definitely great! One thing I was wondering but do you ever thought about changing the type of algorithm Teracopy uses to check the files? Or perhaps you think CRC is fine for what it does?

System: XP Pro, core2 duo 6400, Asrock Dual 775, 2 GB Ram,
all standard applications running (Antivirus etc.)
      ————————————————————————
copy to ext. HDD via USB 2.0 (~30Mb/s)
      1 Folder incl. 3525 subfolders & 106645 files (71246 pictures) =7,22 GB size

Windows XP = 30min / no fragmented files (other PC operations work ok while copying)
Directory Opus = 40min / 40MB fragmented/ 16 files (other PC operations slow while copying)
TurboNavigator = 50min / no fragmented files (other PC operations slow while copying)
Teracopy = 55min / 140MB fragmented/ 62 files (other PC operations very sluggish while copying)
      ————————————————————————–
copy from one ext. HDD to another ext. HDD via e_Sata and USB 2.0
1 File of XML image backup = 26,7 GB (any fragmentation would take considerable time to defrag)

      Windows XP = 21min / no fragments
      Teracopy = 22min / 23 fragments (copy speed 20MB/s)
      Directory Opus = 28min / 2 fragments
      —————————————————————————–
Yes, windows XP copier breaks up the process if detecting any unsuitable file (example: name too long)
ans it will take considerable time & diligence to find that place of fault. Therfore not to be recommended
with unknown file material like downloaded web pages etc.

All the other copying routines DOPUS, Teracopy, TurboNavigator permit pausing, continuation and skipping of faulty files. With large files like

Video clips, backup files, etc. consideration for fragmentation may be important. To defragment a 26 GB file with only 2 or 3 fragments will still

take more time than the actual copying itself. There the windows XP copying routine would be best.

    265. Michael on July 14, 2009 03:21

It the 2.0 Betas as well as the nightlies, TeraCopy would copy and/or move files at around 90MB/sec, however with 2.01 Final, TeraCopy is only copying and or moving files at between 35MB/sec – just over 50MB/sec. What is going on, and why the big change in speed?

    266. myzx13 on September 8, 2009 05:56

Maybe because with high speed, it causes unexpected crashes. Like I encounter before with the 2.0 Beta. I transferred Gig of files then it crash. With 2.01 Final, it work just fine. I am not sure it that is the reason, its just my own speculation.

To be consistent with other options, “NoClose” should also be an .ini file option as well.
