PS. Please do not submit AVG virus reports about Win32/Heur.
Because this is a generic (so to speak) detection, the file has not been 100% confirmed to be malware by the virus analysts (e.g. it has not yet been given a name), so there is a chance that the file is being mistakenly detected and it is not actually malicious.
VirusTotal report. You can turn off heuristic scanning or add an exception for DF.

I love this software, it saves me alot of clicks.
But my df 3.32, it was always crashing, always complaining of kernel32.dll error.
Doesn’t seem to work correctl in Win7. I can double-click on the desktop, but in Windows Explorer, it doesn’t work.
@Alex
DF can’t intercept it in Win7, please use middle button click, it should work everywhere.
This isn’t working in XP SP3. It hangs after double click. I have Directory Opus so was particularly glad regarding this update.
Hi, the download does not work…..cannot get 3.6 to download, keeps stalling as download comes to completion…..tried on 2 different computers at home and at work. Can you fix the download issue please?

Well done, Jeff! Great to see another update to DirectFolders (DF), a utility I couldn’t be without.
I use DOpus as well, and so it’s great to know that DF is compatible with DOpus.
One question. How can I make the double-click on white space, to start DF, work in DOPus? I know DOpus has a facility for ediiting its own context menus and so the ‘white space’ must be editable as well.
BTW, I meant to add:
* download worked for me,
* install was straightforward
* program has seamlessly continued to function after installation.
I’m very happy.
Jeff, I found it. Middle-click on the ‘white-space’ in DOpus opens the DirectFolders menu. Yay!
The ‘Add Here’ command now works properly by filling in the pathname. Great! This wasn’t working for me in previous versions.
A suggestion for the next version. Some kind of backup system for the config and menu files. In the space of two weeks I’ve twice accidentally lost some of my menus – I must have deleted them without realising. It could be a manual SaveAs button on the configuration window or something more sophisticated. The manual button would suit me as I could save before and after making changes to the menus. 🙂
My #1 workflow enchancer just got that much more perfect with the Directory Opus support. When you spend a great portion of your day navigating through folders this is such a timesaver. Thanks for the DOpus support! 🙂 I constantly encourage people to try out DF and to buy the (cheap) pro version.
Progam is buggy. Several times (and very randomly) I get a message when I double click the middle mouse button in a open dialog box;
“A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer.
This program will open outside protected mode.
Details C:\Windows\Explorer.exeâ€
I tried it on 2 clean systems, once on a different computer, once in a fresh install in Vmware of the same OS; same error.
This happens in Windows Vista X64. Never had any of this with any other program.
Turns out that it happens when you have Internet Explorer running (which is in protected mode on Vissta) and you want to start a second program in which you open a dialog box and use the middle mouse button (which I do a lot), Direct Folders has at that moment the focus wrong and thinks it’s still in IE so the protected mode kick in. I hope that this gets solved, now I’m not eager to buy the pro version, even if it has features I most definitely like.
Btw, doesn’t seem to be doing this with all programs, programs for which it failed were UltraIso, Notepad, VueScan, etc
C’mon hey, don’t just edit the blog comments, also take time to communicate with your customers or potential customers, because that’s something that lacks on this this blog.
Just my 2 cents.
Do you have any hints on how best to move items in the menu? I use click and drag but the behaviour is not predictable. Will DF respond to keyboard directions? I’ve tried the arrows and Ctrl/arrows but without a response.

JDonner, I haven’t seen your error message before. I’m on XP, 32-bit. It sounds a bit like an external computer wants to use IE on your computer???? I can’t imagine this being a result of installing DF.
Just my view.
JDonner,
If you disconnect from the internet, do you still get the message?
@Greg
Hi, I am not able to make 3.6 work in Directory Opus.Not responsive to middle click or double middle click. Anyone know what to do?
@Greg
Greg, like I said earlier; I use Vista X64 and run IE in protected mode.
You run on XP, so you won’t have the issue because IE can’t run in protected mode in XP.
The author however clearly claims on his web site that the program is compatible with Vista X64, which is not the case.
“If you disconnect from the internet, do you still get the message?”
Yes, but why are you asking this? I repeat what I said earlier;
“I tried it on 2 clean systems, once on a different computer, once in a fresh install in Vmware of the same OS; same error.”
This is clearly a bug in the program.
Btw, don’t get me wrong, I’m not bothered by bugs, I’m bothered by people who write such software refusing to communicate on their own blog.
Theoretically it’s possible that DF posted text with path to the IE address bar instead of open file dialog address bar. But how IE can have focus when you middle click in open dialog? Never seen this, at least on Win7 x64, don’t have Vista now. Please how to reproduce problem step by step, did it happens in 32/64bit programs only? Try also Win+Q hotkey.
Watch of the arrow top (^) when dragging, if it points to the upper half of item, dragged item will be inserted before that item.
“Theoretically it’s possible that DF posted text with path to the IE address bar instead of open file dialog address bar.”
Nothing appears in IE 7 address bar when I do that
“But how IE can have focus when you middle click in open dialog?”
I’m no expert, I’m just seeing the behavior.
“Please how to reproduce problem step by step”
That’s actually easy, I start with no applications open;
– I open IE 7 in Vista X64 SP1, I don’t go to a web site or type anything, I just open it
– I open notepad, file/open and when I click the middle mouse button in the open dialog box I get the message mentioned earlier, screenshot:
(screenshot here: http://i43.tinypic.com/2cfbfqq.gif )
If I disable protected mode in IE and close both apps and try it again, then everything is ok. Needless to say that I don’t want to run with protected mode disabled.
Note: when I open IE 7 and open windows explorer before opening notepad (or any other application affected by the issue), then I don’t get the messsage either.
I also tried running IE with all add-ons disabled, same problem.
“did it happens in 32/64bit programs only?”
I don’t understand that question, because 16 bit applications can’t run on Vista X64, so yes, it happens in 32/64bit programs only.
Notepad is 64 bit, other programs like UltraIso that had the same issue are 32 bit.
“Try also Win+Q hotkey.”
I tried…same error
Man, I wish I could get this to work. I run a large photoshop site and used a similar program in the past called Chameleon Folder to quickly import icons and screenshots and test with IE and FF, but Chamelon Folder doesn’t work properly with Vista.
I also like the Pro version feature that allows me set default folders, very useful for me, so it annoys me that this irritating bug is stopping me from buying the program.
What I find strange is that not all programs are affected.
I don’t want to fill this whole blog with the issue, so if you want to discuss this in private, feel free to E-mail me. If it’s solved you got yourself a new customer.
I was just wondering if Direct Folders was responsible for the extra buttons (minimise to tray?, always on top?) on the title bar on the configuration page: http://help.codesector.com/DirectFoldersConfiguration
If not, what is?
Thanks!
Bug with Explorer.exe. After restarting the explorer process, DF exits silently. Though all the over tray “citizens” are being restored. Checked on several pc’s.
I would love to test this version but I ordered the pro version almost a week ago and have not received any license key. E-Mails sent to both Codesector and Plimus were left unanswered. This is getting ridiculous!
@Chen
I’ve sent you reg code on May 16. Please contact me online or via support ticket.
These buttons was removed, but you can use right click on close (always on top) and maximize (roll-up) buttons.
Hey Jeff, I had an issue, I explained it, you asked a question, I responded in quite some detail and yet you refuse to contact me again, either here or as I suggested with the E-mail that I registered with.
What’s wrong with you? I’m really interested in this promising program, but I feel that I have to BEG you to take me as your customer for Pete’s sake!
You know what, I give up, with such a lack on interest in new customers I start to get serious doubts about support for this product once I buy it.
I don’t get people like you, I seriously don’t, you act arrogant, as if you run some huge businness that can do without a customer or two…sigh
@jdonner
I’ve finally solved the issue! More people will suffer from this issue, that’s already clear to me. If you have the same issue; post your email address (of course with something like REMOVETHIS in it to stop email spam bots) and I will inform you about the solution.
Forget about it, I was wrong, the bug is still there. I give up…sigh
…turned out that the problem only exist if you have Internet explorer open and visible, the problem goes away if you have the internet explorer window minimized to the taskbar.
I love Direct Folders!! or, that is, I did till Sophos Antivirus quarantined df.exe telling me that it has the Mal/Generic-A virus, as did the Config.dll file in the Direct Folders folder. after cleaning, I downloaded and reinstalled again – Same thing. Same issue. Anybody else have this? I submitted a ticket to Code Sector a few hours ago. it’s quite frustrating!
Hi, love the program, makes navigating around my system so much faster! Whats the possibility of adding a feature that would allow you to also have a list of often used programs? please?????????? Anyone else want to see something like this? Post a note…
Thanks for such a handy program……
@Susan, YES! I get an alert from current NOD32 also — but these are false positives. Obviously something the application does (hook?) makes AVs think it’s “virus like”. Jeff has noted this already at the top of the page.
Most AV software will let you exempt folders or individual files from being scanned. I’d suggest that you do this to stop further innocent removals of the files you noted. 🙂
I’m using windows 7 x64 and When I download direct folders and try to run the setup, I get this everytime -> “setup files are corrupted” Any one else run into this and what did they do to get around it?
@Susan
I have the exact same problem. As a result I can’t get to the config menu, which is a pain. I’m trying to experiment with killing Sophos, but there’s always something running that prevents this.
@Michael Stout
Short Term solution is to reinstall direct folders (to put the config.dll back), logout/login, kill any sav_blahblahblah.exe (that’s SOPHOS), then you may access the configuration window.
I believe that as long as you don’t execute the config option while SOPHOS savblahblah.exe services are running, then you won’t get the DLL in quarantine. That means that if you want to use the configuration, kill the SOPHOS processes, then go to the config menu for direct folders. Relogin to get SOPHOS running again.
Can not use Double Click in Windows7,Why?
Does anyone know how I can make the “save as” dialog window NOT be automatically centered?
program crashes (win 7 x64) when file dialog tries to open in a folder that has been removed.
I have Vista SP2 and it direct folders doesn’t work properly. Double click doesn’t work on desktop or Windows Explorer. Only one of my programs recognizes Direct Folders and it uses it properly. Nothing else seems to. I can navigate to folders by left-clicking on the tray icon but that defeats the purpose. Anybody else having problems with Vista?
Same here w/the double-click on Win7. No plans on using this any more (and we have the Pro version) until this is resolved. The middle button on the Logitech Revolution isn’t the friendliest to click down.
Direct Folder discontinued?. I have read this in some forums. The autor doesn’t reply any support mail. Maybe is it true?. It’s a pity because is a good application.
Folder Menu 3 – freeware – http://foldermenu.sourceforge.net/ – works fine w/double-clicking left on Windows 7
Re DOpus integration, if there is no DOpus window open, I middle click on the desktop to open the DF menu, and then click on a folder, Directory Opus does open a window at the correct folder location. However, if I then, while the DOpus window has focus, middle click to open the DF menu and then click on a different folder, DOpus does not respond in any manner. Nothing happens, when DOpus should switch to the new window, yes? (Win XP SP3, DOpus 9.5).
Thanks
i want to download it. but my computer when downloading it, nod 32 is doing alarm. how i downloading. please help
Good morning,
I love DirectFolders but for some reason, the Configure option isn’t working. I can add new locations all day long but then I can’t sort/arrange them. This feature worked fine on my XP system. This is a clean install of Windows 7, not an upgrade.
Using right-mouse click on the icon in the status tray and selecting Configure doesn’t work. Neither does using the ‘Add Here’ hot key and selecting Configure.
Any help would be appreciated.
Windows 7 Ultimate
Build: 7600.16481.x86fre.win7_gdr.091207-1941
Strange..
“Middle button click” don’t work in Windows Firefox 3.6 “Save” or “Save as” dialog.
Other “Save” dialogs work fine.
Is this a known problem?
Regards
Richard
@h gokhan
Hello, if you go into NOD32, Advanced Setup, Web Access Protection, Address Management, add the web address from whch the file is downloading……..might not be the same as the website, look at the actual download dialogue and it will show you where the file is coming from. Hope that helps…..worked for me 🙂
I have the same problem as Richard. The middle button does not work in FireFox 3.6 … neither do the hotkeys (i mean, they do popup DirectFolders’ menu, but selecting an item will just open the file explorer instead of changing the folder in the save dialog of FF 3.6).
Incidentally, FireFox was the app where I was making the most use out of DF. There hasn’t been an update to DF in a long time … do you plan to update it anytime soon? I don’t really want to look for an alternative to DF.
Regards
Please make an update for FF3.6! Doesnt work anymore. 🙁
Please make it work for Firefox 3.6, i’m using Direct Folder pretty much for download purpose.
I think development is stopped. 🙁 No one can hear our cries for help 🙁
@Richard
I think you’re right … It’s such a pity.
I would continue the development if it was made open-source. There are alternatives but all of them are either crappy or missing TC integration. I wonder if something can be done with AutoHotKey since it can send messages to windows, hence read from TC’s window and possible change directory in an active File Open/Save As dialog. I’ll post back here if I come around to do it (and will also make it open source).
I made this little Script in AutoIT. I create a ticket for a integration with Folder Menus, You can see here:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2977414&group_id=275170&atid=1169139
I hope you will be helpful
Hello Code Sectors.
Awesome software. Works well for me 99.9 percent of the time on my XP system. A must have for anyone dealing with computing in any kind of serious way.
I would like to see an auto-update feature added, or at least a notification option – check for updates …
With versions up to 3.3 it used to give 2 lists, one above and one below the “Global Recent”.
Now all above are grayed out, adn say “buy Pro”.
What is the difference in the two lists?
I would pay, it is a great idea, but it is intermittent on W7-64; just dies sometimes.
Thanks.
